BMW 118i 5-Door Hot Hatchback Car Review & Test Drive

BMW 118i 5-Door Hatchback

Lady luck must be on my side, barely a month after testing the great 325i M Sports, I have the honour to test drive another BMW. This time, it is the premium-badge small hatchbacks namely BMW 118i.

Some quick facts for the car enthusiasts out there, 118i comes with a 136 bhp 2 liter four-cylinders Valvetronic and Double-VANOS engine. This advanced valve control Technology servers a dual purpose. Valvetronic enhances performance and fuel economy using infinitely variable valve lift control, while Double-VANOS ensures an ideal Torque curve over the entire rev range. Hence, this beemer is capable of hitting a top speed of 204 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint in 10 seconds flat.

118i's design and styling was obviously inspired from its 3 and 5 Series big brothers. I find the design very contemporary and macho although there were complains that the huge headlamps coupled with the overly-aggressive front is too big for its body, resulting in an awkward and disproportional look.

Front Interior Cabin

You can't expect leather racing seat and carbon fibre upholstery as other pricier BMW models, after all this is an entry level beemer. Nevertheless, BMW 118i's interior cabin design is classy and elegant with top notch build quality. The fabric seat is comfortable, all key controls are within reach, easy to comprehend and well-engineered.

Signature 'Start Stop Engine' Button

3-Spoke Driving Wheel with Integrated Controls

The signature 'Keyless Remote Control' & 'Start Stop Engine' button is present, as well as climate control, integrated audio & voice command on driving wheel, front and rear reading lights for all passengers, plus great audio system that comes with integrated iPod connection via AUX input.

Meter & Multi-Info Display

Metallic Gear Knob

Although there is no F1 paddle-shift behind the steering wheel, manual gear changes are still possible via the gear knob. Thankfully BMW does not skimp on safety gizmos. There are driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, plus traction and dynamic stability control. An alarm, immobilisers, remote central locking and deadlocks are in place to keep thieves at bay too.

How does this little beast behaves on the road? Fantastic is the word that comes to my mind. You can feel the surge of power right from the start. I'm also impressed by the superb body control, loads of grip and a balanced feel provided by the front-engined, rear-wheel-drive chassis. However, the 118i suffers from occasional power inadequacy especially on highways or when overtaking. This is probably caused by the delayed surge of power that's only available at higher revs.

Thanks to BMW's 'Efficient Dynamics' technology. 118i's fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions are one of the best in the class. The rear-wheel drive on the BMW 118i also imparts dynamic energy to every manoeuvre and plays a significant role in obtaining an ideal body weight distribution.

The result? Incomparable agility, excellent handling and precision steering. Or, to put it another way: pure driving pleasure.

Pros:
- Nice design and one of the hottest hatch
- Great pick-up power
- Agile and fun to drive
- Efficient Dynamics: great fuel efficiency + reduce emission
- Only production hatchback in the world to feature a rear-wheel drive configuration

Cons:
- Air-cond vents are hard to adjust
- Power lagged at high revs
- No paddle shift
- No HID lamp
- Limited space for rear seats
- Average stability at high speed

Normally, I'll first scoop some porridge and then add in frog meat with gravy. The dark sauce comes with the right amount of spiciness from the dried chillies, saltiness from the oyster sauce & sweetness from the frog meat. In short, it is lip-smacking good.
